Attaching PIR plates: glue, screws and adhesive foam

When attaching PIR plates, there are several methods available depending on your specific application. Whether you have a sloping roof, a wall or a flat roof, there are suitable options to install the insulation boards firmly and efficiently.

Sloping roof and wall

To attach PIR plates to a sloping roof or wall, you can choose between screws and glue. When using ventilation slats in combination with insulation screws , you ensure good air circulation behind the insulation plates, which prevents moisture problems. First screw the ventilation slats into place and then attach the PIR plates using pressure distribution plates.

An alternative method is to use adhesive foam. Apply the adhesive foam to the back of the PIR panels and place them directly on the wall. This approach is especially useful if you choose to attach the insulation boards directly to the inside of the wall.

Flat roof

When insulating a flat roof, you can choose between gluing, screwing or a combination of both. The type of roofing you have, such as EPDM or bitumen, can influence the best mounting method.

In most cases, professionals start by gluing the PIR panels to the roof boarding using polyurethane foam. This ensures a firm bond and prevents the plates from coming loose in strong winds. The plates are then additionally secured with screws and pressure distribution plates, which provides extra stability.

For smaller flat roofs, the use of screws and pressure distribution plates may be sufficient, without the need for PUR foam.

Gluing and screwing

Attaching PIR plates can be done with either glue or screws, depending on the situation. For flat roof insulation, screws and pressure distribution plates are usually chosen. This provides sufficient strength, unless it is a large roof with specific wind load requirements.

For sloping roof insulation and wall insulation, the choice between adhesives and screws is more flexible and depends on your personal preference. In general, screws provide a more secure attachment, especially with heavier sheet material placed against the wall.

Gluing PIR plates to wood

Insulating foam is a suitable choice for gluing PIR panels to wood. Make sure you use an adhesive foam that does not affect the foil lining to maintain adhesion and ensure insulation value.

Things to take into account

When attaching PIR panels to wood, it is important to also take the vapor barrier foil into account. Vapor barrier films are often used to prevent moisture from penetrating the insulation and causing damage. It is important to install the vapor barrier foil correctly to ensure good moisture regulation.

To glue PIR boards to wood, you can use insulating foam suitable for this purpose. Apply the insulation foam evenly to the back of the PIR board and press it firmly against the wood surface. Make sure the foam spreads evenly and creates good adhesion.

Before applying the PIR panels, you can also attach vapor barrier foil to the wood. This can help prevent moisture problems. Place the damp proof film over the wood surface making sure it is properly sealed and has no gaps for moisture to penetrate.

After applying the foil, you can glue the PIR plates to the wood using the insulating foam. Be sure to apply enough foam to ensure a firm bond. Press the PIR boards firmly against the wood surface and allow the foam to cure according to the manufacturer's instructions.

It is always advisable to consult the installation instructions and recommendations of the manufacturer of the PIR panels, insulation foam and vapor barrier foil. This ensures that you use the correct materials and methods to securely and efficiently attach the PIR boards to wood and ensure good insulation.
